The U.S. Department of State's International Information Programs issued the following press release:
Even though China's economy has improved, the human rights situation "remains abysmal," says Representative Christopher Smith, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Human Rights and International Operations.
"So-called economic reform has utterly failed to result in the protection of freedom of speech, expression, or assembly." Smith, a Republican from New Jersey, said April 19 at a House hearing on the human rights in China.
