Article: MARINES FACE OFF IN FORT BONIFACIO

A MARINE colonel sacked over an alleged coup plot against President Arroyo holed up in Fort Bonifacio on Sunday with several dozen other Marines and urged the public to rally round him.

Col. Ariel Querubin said he was taking the action in protest at the unexplained resignation earlier in the day of Marines commandant, Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda.

The Armed Forces said Querubin voluntarily resigned his command.

A Marine platoon, led by a lieutenant colonel, later arrived to join Querubin along with an armored personnel carrier with a mounted machinegun.

The government, which declared a state of emergency Friday over the alleged coup plot, had no immediate reaction to Querubin's action. ...
