The health and nutritional benefits of coconut oil have been recognized in many parts of the world for centuries. Research has shown that coconut oil is a valuable source of lauric acid, the medium-chain saturated fatty acid precursor to the antimicrobial lipid monolaurin, which has important functional benefits for individuals with compromised immune systems for growing children and the elderly. Studies are being conducted on the effectiveness of coconut oil to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV/AIDS).
