Campbell's book is a revised form of his dissertation (Oxford University, 1991, directed by G. Vermes) that has been updated to include consideration of recently accessible material from Qumran Cave 4. He summarizes his thesis in these words: "Essentially, it is argued that the Damascus Document 1-8 and 19-20 consistently draws upon a select body of scriptural contexts by way of citation and allusion. It is at this level that the unity of the text can be found" (p. ix).
