IN central Chile in 1538 the Spanish conquistador Juan de Saavedra founded a settlement strategically located between the Pacific coast and the steep slopes of the Andes mountain ranges. He named the picturesque community Valparaiso, or "Valley of Paradise."

The 16th century was a tumultuous period and Valparaiso was not spared, what with the numerous English and Dutch pirate attacks on the bountiful settlement.
