Article: New bridge brings controversy

No hands went up Monday when a resident asked if any of his neighbors favor a proposed new bridge across Swift Creek at Cook Street. The residents turned out to a meeting at Hamilton Elementary School to protest a second bridge over the creek to Isle la Plume, held in advance of a special La Crosse Common Council session to consider the issue Thursday. The council postponed a decision earlier this month due to neighbors' concerns over traffic and crime.

The city has $500,000 in the capital improvement budget for a new bridge. City Planner Larry Kirch wants to use that money to apply for a federal grant that would pay half the $1 million cost of a new bridge and 1.3 mile paved ...
