Inmate-visitation responsibilities can pose a significant burden for detention facilities, particularly in county jails where the proximity of relatives and friends lends itself to more frequent visitation. In such a setting, an inmate may be visited by wives, parents, siblings and close friends on a weekly basis.
This heavy load of visitors carries with it the high recurring cost of corrections personnel needed to facilitate and monitor the process.
