THE origin of Mother's Day is attributed to one Julia Ward Howe of New York, an American writer, lecturer and reformer, who was one of the most prominent women of her time. She became interested in the women's movement, and was the first president of the New England Woman Suffrage Association. Her preference for the celebration of Mother's Day was June 2 because it was a day dedicated to peace.
