INTRODUCTION
Pakistan, born of the violent partition of British India, has been destined to have an unusually large army, which has outgrown its watchdog role to become the master of this nation state. The fear of the Indian juggernaut in the East had fuelled its quest for an army much beyond its affordability and requirements. This fear also guided Pakistan's foreign policy right from beginning. India on the other hand never helped in assuaging these fears. In the nascent stages, politicians in Pakistan led the people to believe that India had not reconciled to the creation of Pakistan and emphasized the permanent threat from India.
