Revolutionary Prosthetics-The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, has awarded Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), Baltimore, a $30.4 million contract to create a prosthetic arm for wounded service members, among other leadingedge technologies. The goal is to produce a mechanical arm that is indistinguishable in use and appearance to the missing limb and that can feel and manipulate objects, lift up to 60 pounds and accomplish everyday tasks.
