Gov. Jim Doyle, D-Wis., issued the following news release:
After conferring with Major General Al Wilkening, commander of the Wisconsin National Guard, Gov. Jim Doyle today announced that he would agree to send Wisconsin National Guard troops to participate in short-term border security missions if asked to do so.
In recent days, officials with the Wisconsin National Guard have been assured that any deployment would be short-term and on a rotating basis, and that the federal government would fully cover the cost.
Governor Doyle made the following statement:
"When President Bush first announced his plan to deploy National Guard troops on a border security mission, I asked General Wilkening ...
