Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and thank you for inviting me to open the 2006 Nursery and Garden Industry Joint Australia and New Zealand Annual Conference and Exhibition.

May I say at the outset that your conference theme, "The Nature of Profits -- Business and Personal Growth in the 'eco-age'", is appropriate?

The Australian nursery and garden industry is significant by anyone's standard.

It has an estimated economic value in excess of $5 billion and provides employment for 45,000 people.
