Week before last, I remember the date, Two of us took Main Street to agitate A Woman's Edition of the Knightstown Sun, And get advertising by the pound or ton.
Most of the merchants received us quite kindly, I have not a doubt we went at it blindly, Not unlike candidates making first calls, But then C.E. Workers nothing appalls.
So begins a bit of doggerel which describes a foray into journalism by women of Knightstown, Indiana. These women of the community produced a special women's edition in 1896, toward the end of a phenomenon in newspapering which had begun two years before in Rockford, Illinois.2 Although Knightstown and Rockford were not major urban areas, like other communities ...
