DIDO AND AENEAS ON PBS
Following on the heels of last January's The Rake's Progress, a made-for-television film starring Greg Fedderly as Tom Rakewell and Barbara Hendricks as Anne Trulove, Great Performances presents a new film of Purcell's only opera, Dido and Aeneas, made in 1995 in honor of the 300th anniversary of the composer's death.
Filmed at Britain's Hampton Court, the production boasts a striking couple in Maria Ewing and Karl Daymond (left). The latter, a newcomer for most American viewers, boasts a pleasing baritone with a vibrato that is rapid enough to allow for all of Purcell's figurations to be clearly heard.
