Iron deficiency in the infant or pregnant woman can have serious consequences. In the pregnant woman it can cause low birthweight or preterm delivery. Iron deficiency in the infant, even if it has not yet progressed to iron deficiency anemia, can cause neurological delays in development. In preschool children iron deficiency can be the cause of behavioral problems that may continue on into the school years if the deficiency has not been corrected.
Iron deficiency is less commonplace in developed countries, and in the United States increased iron intake has caused a decline in childhood iron deficiency anemia. Nevertheless, there are still populations in the United States that have an ...
