Pennsylvania is suffering from a long-term shortage of child psychiatrists that is expected to worsen in the next decade, according to area mental-health professionals.
The problem is especially acute in rural areas and for low-income families that might not have access to quality care. The result is continued pressure on child psychiatrists who have increasingly busy workloads. Some patients also have to travel for hours to find an available doctor or wait months to be seen.
