In the interest of full disclosure, I should admit right off that I've slept in James Thurber's bed. It was 35 years after his death, and I was alone, but still, Pm arguably connected to the man. I'd been invited to Columbus to give a reading at his childhood home (the one where the bed fell, the dam broke, the dog bit people, and the ghost got in), which is now preserved as a sort of community arts center and gift shop (instead of the promised fee, I got a free baseball cap emblazoned with Thurber's trademark hound-dog drawing).
