Demons stalk the mind of 20th-century man as menacingly as they stalked the consciousness of the Dark Ages. The national hysteria provoked by that stupidly potent `demon eyes' poster of Tony Blair is only the most recent reminder that science has hardly exorcised the demon from our world: 1990s Britain has a mediaeval quality.
As a Member of Parliament, I discovered to my astonishment what as a journalist I rediscover often: mention the subject of demons, devils, witches or black magic, and a significant minority of your countrymen will go ballistic. Now on the other side of the media fence, I have found that any reference to the Black Arts provokes letters from frightened or angry ...
