Island populations have been of great fascination to population geneticists and biological anthropologists because these reproductively isolated and often small human aggregates offer an opportunity to investigate the effects of stochastic processes and unique historical events. For example, the research on the population of Tristan da Cunha by Roberts (1968) yielded considerable insight into the evolutionary effects of unique historical events on subsequent generations.
