More than 162 million Americans use nonprescription drugs to treat minor health problems.
That's more than 85% of the adult population. One reason people are turning to OTC medications is the growing number of former prescription drugs that now are available for over-the-counter purchase. Consumers have confidence in products that have an Rx heritage. A survey found that 57% of consumers polled believe that Rx-to-OTC-switched drugs are more potent than other nonprescription drugs, and 56% of those polled consider them as effective as Rx drugs. Also, it's less expensive and easier to buy an OTC than it is to obtain and fill a prescription.
