The city of Lawrence issued the following news release:
Snapping turtles near Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., are currently laying their eggs. From late May into June, these turtles leave the water and migrate, looking for loose soil to bury their eggs, particularly after rain. Mary's Lake at the nature center is home to many of these turtles.
Female turtles can lay up to 50 eggs, but the eggs have a high mortality rate because of the large number of predators. Turtles lay their eggs on land and then return to the water - as they do not care for their young.
