The future of the intermodal management system (IMS) and five other management systems is being discussed as Congress prepares for the reauthorization of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA).

The General Accounting Office (GAO) is preparing recommendations to Congress on the future of these systems. As input to this report, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Planning (SCOP) surveyed the states on their use of the management systems, and endorsed the voluntary continuation of these systems.
