Article: The business of deer hunting

A round sunrise Saturday morning, Nov. 23, the woods and fields of rural Wisconsin will teem with participants in an age-old ritual passed down from generation to generation.

People who aren't deer hunters or particularly involved in the outdoors may not realize the impact deer hunting, either with rifles or with bow and arrow, has in Wisconsin. But the annual hunt that star Nov. 23 and ends Dec. 1 carries with it an economic impact of $500 million in this state.

Consider the impact of a proposal the Department of Natural Resources made and the Legislature passed for a special four-day season in parts of the state in late October to whittle down the 1.5 million deer herd.
