Casual travelers through Calumet County are greeted with rolling, pastoral landscapes, scenic lake views and quaint scenes of small-town America.
Until a few years ago, this first impression may have been accurate. But today, Calumet County is a county in transition. Will the county opt to become a suburban environment, or will urbanization through growth in business and industry be the order of the day?
More and more of the county's farmland is being converted to residential property. And the county's business focus to date has been on successfully keeping and supporting expansion of what industry it has, rather than attracting new firms.
