With more hospitals going deeper into the wellness business with fitness facilities, controversy has erupted among competing private enterprise businesses, especially when the medical facilities are non-profit and don't pay income, property or sales taxes.

"We do not get involved in the debate over whether a medical fitness center should be for-profit or nonprofit," aid Gary Wing, executive director of the Medical Fitness Association in Richmond. She did not know how many of her members were for profit.
