HAVING sexy abs is a serious business, not merely a matter of vanity.

For one, studies show that waistline measurements and waist-hip ratio are good indicators of risks of chronic diseases. Men and women whose waistlines measure at least 40 inches and 35 inches are at greater risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. As well, a bulging waistline almost doubles a woman's chances of forming gallstones, which requires surgery for removal.

Visceral fat, located deep in the abdomen, piles up as people age, and are more active than fat in other types of the body, explains researchers from the University of Kentucky and Harvard Medical School.
