Article: TERRORIST GROUP IN SULU SPLINTERS

ZAMBOANGA CITY: The terrorist group that has been the object of the renewed military offensive in the island of Sulu has splintered to make it easier for its members to evade pursuing government offensive.

Col. Mohammad Nur Askalani, Southern Command spokesman, said there were reported sightings of the terrorist group but that they are now fewer.

"That's the probability. They splintered into smaller groups," Askalani said in a telephone interview.

The offensive was launched on August 1 following reports that some 200 terrorists, reportedly members of the Jemaah Islamiah and Abu Sayyaf, were seen converging in the town of Indanan.
