Article: 3 Sikh students to stay expelled: French court

NEW DELHI, India, April 21 -- A FRENCH administrative court in Temelun has upheld the expulsion of three Sikh schoolchildren for wearing turban on the ground that this article of faith made them instantly recognisable as Sikhs.

Delivering a four-page judgment, the administrative tribunal led by G. Roth yesterday held that as per law the administration need not consider if the turban had a proselytising effect or that it led to breach of public order or not. The judgment order was faxed to Felix De Belloy, lawyer who represented the three Sikh schoolboys, Jasbir Singh, Bikramjit Singh and Ranjit Singh, before the tribunal, according to a statement of US-based rights body United Sikhs.
