Article: Massachusetts Inventors Develop Filamentous Material Fused Loop

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 19 -- Thomas D. Egan and Paul V. Fenton Jr., both of Marblehead, Mass., have developed materials and devices for making high-strength fused suture loops during surgical procedures.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, the invention relates to a "welding apparatus that includes a first member having a first suture-contacting surface, a second member having a second suture-contacting surface, and a device for moving the first member relative to the second member to define a gap between the respective suture-contacting surfaces.
