Objective measurements of tear function, serum hormone levels allow physiologic assessment

Portland, OR-Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not appear to alter the incidence of dry eye symptoms or physiologic dry eye in women prior to or during menopause, according to Oregon researchers.

Corneal specialist William D. Mathers, MD, and colleagues at Oregon Health Sciences University's Casey Eye Institute (CEI), Portland, completed a study to determine whether women undergoing HRT had improved tear function or fewer symptoms of dry eye during menopause, as compared with women who were not undergoing HRT.
