Copper minerals are widespread, numerous, and abundant in New Mexico. Eighty-one species have been reported from throughout the state (Northrop, 1996). All but six of New Mexico's 33 counties have copper mineral locations. Socorro County heads up this list with 47 species, followed closely by Grant County with 43 species. Five additional counties report over 20 species each and eight more counties have a minimum of ten species.
