Article: Voting Rights Act blockage may have helped spur big passage

When the U.S. House of Representatives finally voted on the extension of the historic Voting Rights Act, the issue was never in doubt.

By a margin of 390-33, Democrats and Republicans agreed: it was still important in America to protect the right of everyone to a fair and free election, one that incorporates all individuals in society equally.

But in a perverse way, it is possible that the brief uprising that House Republican conservatives waged against the bill three weeks ago - which caused House Speaker Dennis Hastert to pull the measure from a scheduled June 21 vote on the House floor - may have actually strengthened the bill the second time around.
