Although most nurses are familiar with Florence Nightingale and her influence on nursing, how many of us can readily describe a man who has had a similar impact on our profession? For those whose knowledge of nursing history begins with Nightingale, the presence of men as nurses may seem to be a recent phenomenon. Actually, men have served as nurses throughout recorded history. Some, like Henri Dunant, who led the formation of the International Red Cross and received the first Nobel Peace Prize, have also profoundly influenced our profession (Table 11.1).
As nursing faculty, we may not be cognizant of men's contribution to nursing. Or we may view men as "newcomers" who are choosing nursing ...
