Writing Across the Nursing Curriculum Project

Many faculty are concerned about the lack of writing skills in both undergraduate and graduate students (Schmidt, 2004a, 2004b). At our university students were submitting such poor-quality papers that we were pleased when we found a verb in a sentence. We were, quite simply, appalled and frequently lamented, "What do they teach them down there (on the main campus)?" Recognizing the significance of writing skills to the success of our graduates, we critically examined the writing process in our nursing curriculum in an attempt to move our students to a level of communication and scholarship that would serve them well in their careers.
