The Art of Questioning: Improving Critical Thinking

As nursing faculty members, it is important for us to teach students how to think critically. The methods for delivering nursing education are changing along with growing demands on our time and energy. Nursing faculty members are called on to engage students in the learning process in the classroom, clinical setting, and online environment. Although each of these learning venues has unique strategies for engaging students in the educational process, the art of questioning is one strategy that can be employed in all educational delivery methods. The purpose of this chapter is to describe how to develop and use questions to challenge students to think critically.
