Liberalism and Its Discontents: Reading Black and White in Contemporary Quebecois Texts

This paper focusses on the long - standing linkage of black and Quebecois subjectivities. The black/white metaphor serves to highlight a rivalry between liberal and nationalist ideologies. By examining works of authors such as Suzanne Lantange, Dany Laferriere, Eugene Seers, Emile Nelligan and Michel Garneau, the author concludes that nationalism is alive and well in Quebec literature.
The question of race is increasingly a concern of literature.
