Article: State high school athletic directors ponder proposals

More teams will qualify for high school state tournaments if certain proposals are approved at this week's Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association (HIADA) conference on Kauai.

Four proposals to expand Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournaments from 12 teams to 16 will be up for discussion. The tournaments mentioned in preliminary proposals are baseball, soccer, volleyball and boys basketball.

"I think some schools feel there are inequities with the 12-team format because four of five league champions receive byes," HHSAA Executive Secretary Ed Kiyuna said. "It's maybe a little more fair to have no byes with 16 teams. And it appears 16 teams can be warranted in several ...
