Article: WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SEPTIC SYSTEM IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued the following news release:

Faulty septic systems can leach pollutants into your lake. If you have an on-site septic system, it is important that it be properly maintained. Have it inspected annually or biennially to determine if it needs pumping, and when it needs pumping, use a knowledgeable contractor.

Left unmanaged, solids in your system will build up and will be released into the drain field. It can then become clogged. Failing septic systems may result in surface seeps that carry phosphorus to a lake. This seepage is a public health and an environmental hazard and is probably a violation of local laws.
