Retail is detail, as one hoary clich puts it. And that goes double or even triple for specialty retailers under constant attack from giant, price-pounding chains.

For years, one of the hardiest survivors among the field in Cleveland has been Audio Craft Co. Inc. The four-store audio- and video-equipment chain, with showrooms downtown and in Westlake, Mayfield Heights and Fairlawn, is a study in careful management. Its longtime owner, a naval-radio veteran named Wayne Puntel, has established the kind of reputation that gets him invited to download his wisdom for other industries.
