To be a Pearl Jam fan is hard work. To be a Pearl Jam fan means defending the band when detractors accuse them of navel-gazing and/or grandstanding. It means going without the videos the band refuses to make. It means traveling to out-of-the-way venues so the band can stick to its principled belief that this is the way they can keep fees for concert tickets down.

It was just like Pearl Jam to pass over Oahu, opting to play its two Hawaii shows this weekend in the smaller, more intimate setting of the 5,000-seat Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului.
