Oil prices retreat towards US$70 per barrel on easing of Middle East tensions

* The easing of tensions in the Middle East has prompted a decline in oil prices during the last eight days. After peaking at US$78 per barrel on 07 August, the price of the benchmark Brent crude oil has since fallen by more than US$6 per barrel (trading at US$71.1 per barrel at the time of writing). The West Texas Intermediate (WTI) has experienced similar falls. Another factor putting downward pressure on oil prices in recent days was concern over the strength of air travel demand after the unfolding of the terrorist plot in the UK.
