TORONTO -- The son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau wants Canada to assert itself as a model of transparent justice in dealing with suspected terrorists rather than detaining them out of "knee-jerk fear."
Filmmaker Alexandre Trudeau, who has produced a documentary about the country's security certificate process and the people it has put behind bars, says Canada is damaging its reputation as a champion of human rights.
"If Canada can't play by the rules, what country will? Syria? Russia?" Trudeau said in an interview this week to promote his new documentary, called Secure Freedom.
