Allergies are not just a human phenomenon. Your pet can suffer from allergies, too. And most of the "triggers" (substances which cause allergic reactions) are the same ones that prompt allergic reactions in people.
So how do you know if your pet is allergic? "The number one, chief component to determining if your pet has allergies is scratching," says Allen M. Shoen, D.V.M., who has a veterinary practice in Sherman, Conn. Fleas are among the most common allergens that cause pets to scratch. Excessive scratching can "practically lead pets to tear apart their skin, says Shoen.
