Chabrier's sweeping Gwendoline Overture is deservedly popular on classical radio. The opera itself, however, has been performed rarely since its premiere, in 1886, and it would seem there has been no complete studio recording until now, except for a "pirate" from the 1977 French Radio.
Chabrier quit his job in the French civil service to devote himself to composition after hearing Tristan und Isolde in 1879. Gwendoline was his first serious opera, after the opera bouffe L'Etoile and the operetta Une Education Manquee, and he had ...
