Rome/Ankara, Oct 3 -- Two Turkish extremists hijacked a Turkish Airlines plane Tuesday to protest against a planned visit to Turkey by Pope Benedict XVI.

The Boeing 737, with 107 passengers and six crew on board, was hijacked while flying from Tirana to Istanbul and landed safely in the southern Italian city of Brindisi after being escorted by Greek and Italian air force planes, reports in Italy and Turkey said.

The Italian police was currently engaged in negotiations aimed at securing the passengers' release.
