CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - Cape May County jail officials are turning to Salem County to help get some inmates off their hands.
Cape May County is looking to enter into an agreement that would ship 20 inmates to the Salem County jail.
The Cape May County jail, which has a normal occupancy rate of 182 inmates, has averaged 225 inmates, Cape May County Administrator Stephen O'Connor said Friday.
In the past few months, that number has hit almost 300.
Salem County officials said their jail has some room but won't take an extraordinary number of inmates.
Meanwhile, Cape May County plans to hire an architect next year to look at ways to increase the jail's capacity.
