Article: RESEARCH SHOWS SPINAL CORD CAN LEARN - EVEN WHEN SEVERED

Texas A&M University issued the following news release:

Studies over almost two decades have convinced researchers that the spinal cord can learn, even when it is severed from the brain. But the latest study by a Texas A&M University neuroscientist shows that attempts to stimulate spinal cord learning must be carefully managed for patient benefit.

"Patients with spinal cord injuries may be suffering pain below the level of an injury, even though their brains can't sense the painful stimuli," says psychology professor James Grau. "It's as if their tissues are screaming out unchecked, and such untreated pain can cause further damage, impeding healing from such injuries."
