COTTAGERS and residents in the Gull Lake area are going to get much better cellular phone coverage by the end of the year, something that might have given them more warning of the deadly Aug. 5 tornado.
The first tornado warning was issued that night at 5:44 p.m., 25 minutes after a tornado had already touched down at Gull Lake. Unlike other places, including Alberta, Manitoba has no province-wide public warning in place to warn of a natural disaster.
The area that was hardest hit by the tornado that August afternoon has only spotty cellphone coverage. It's a means of communication some say might be the most appropriate technology to issue warnings, since many people in the ...
