Theft of construction equipment costs the industry about $1 billion a year, but new technology and initiatives by insurance companies and groups such as the National Utility Contractors Association suggest that thieves may have to work harder in the future.

Equipment owners concerned about theft might consider the story of two men being chased by a lion. One stops to put on his sneakers. The second man says it's no use putting on sneakers, you can't outrun a lion. The first man says he doesn't have to outrun the lion; all he has to do is outrun the other guy.
