Article: Preoperative Evaluation: Still Crucial in a Changing Medical Landscape

Same-day surgery and morning admissions for surgical procedures in the hospital have certainly changed the way we evaluate patients for anesthesia. Despite radical changes in our practice we must not lose sight of the value of and reasons for a preoperative evaluation of the patient.

The basic reasons for a preoperative evaluation have remained the same: to reduce the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia, enhance the quality of perioperative care, restore the patient to the highest level of physical/mental health reasonably possible, and obtain an informed consent for the proposed anesthetic.
